Y’all, I can’t believe I forgot to post about our scintillating experience at our first AFL (Australian Football League) game a few weeks back! Everyone should know about Aussie rules football. So spread the word. And play the video/song below as you read this post; it’s the Fremantle Dockers theme song – it’s literally chanted by everyone during the match.
Oh my gosh I was almost in tears (of mirth) listening to a huge stadium of footy fans singing in unison:
Freo Way to Go
Hit Em Real Hard
Send Them Down Below
Freo Give em The Old Heave-Ho
We Are the Freo Dockers
So footy. When we first moved here, I totally thought footy referred to soccer. And then on the weekends here, this game that kind of looks like a combination of rugby, US football, with a little bit of basketball mixed in (and goal posts that kind of remind me of Quidditch), is played back to back to back Friday and Saturday. Nonstop.
Of course there are some complicated rules, but I’ll let you read the specifics on your own time, but you can either score six points or one point, depending on which Quidditch-esque posts you get the ball through.
Also, the umpires, trainers, and medical staff on the field often wear bright pink so they stand out.
Here are some shots of Barr and I enjoying our first footy match a few weeks ago:
In the meantime, go Freo! They’ll be playing the Sydney Swans on Saturday in the qualifying final match – Dad, I expect you to learn the chant and don your fluffy Freo hat in the meantime. 🙂 Until next time…
